Abstract
A series of numerical simulations of SHPB tests using 921A steel pure shear hat-shaped specimens are conducted with ANSYS/LS-DYNA and validated by the SHPB tests in the present paper. Integrated with the theory of stress wave propagation in a SHPB system, the wave propagation in the bars and the dynamic deformations of the specimen under different loading rates V0 (or stress pulses σI(t)) are analyzed, and typical strain wave shapes are identified for different loading rates. Numerical tests of SHPB under ultra-high strain rates (~106 s−1) are specially conducted, which is unable to do realistically. The different deformations and failures of the specimens under different loading rates are also distinguished.
