Abstract
Numerical investigation of spallation has been conducted on three types of steel (HR-2, 2169 and 45) with a damage function model. Model parameters were calibrated by numerical simulation with experimental data. We have determined the spall strength with three kinds of methods, i.e., 1) determined from the acoustical approximation; 2) the theoretical computation from trinomial equation of state; 3) by the numerical simulation of the maximum tensile stress on the spall plane. Results suggest that the spall strength determined by the numerical simulation is reasonable, whereas the traditional acoustic calculation of the spall strength needs to take account of the stress relaxation due to the damage on the spall zone.
