Abstract
The dynamic compressive behavior of a 45 vol.% SiCp/2024Al composite with different specimen sizes over the strain rate range from 1000 to 8500 s−1 was tested by split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The microscopic structure was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the specimen's macroscopic damage and fracture is relevant to its size and strain rate. The SiCp/2024Al composite exhibits little strain-rate sensitivity when the specimen is not broken. And the composite's strength is weakened by adiabatic heat and cumulative damage under high strain rate compression. The composite's ductility is better at higher strain rate.
