Strain rate effects on the mechanical properties of high-purity α-titanium

Abstract
A comprehensive experimental study of strain rate effects on the deformation of high-purity, polycrystalline α-titanium plate is presented. Monotonic uniaxial compression and tension tests were carried out at room temperature under quasi-static conditions to quantify the plastic anisotropy and the tension-compression symmetry of the material. To characterize the material's strain rate sensitivity Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar tests at strain rates of 400 to 600/s were performed along the symmetry axes of the material. It was observed that for both quasi-static and dynamic loading the response is dependent on the orientation of the loading with respect to the <c> axis of the grains. A clear increase in strength with increasing strain rate was observed during loading in the rolling direction, whereas the hardening rate remains practically unchanged for all the other orientations.
