Abstract
The rate dependency of concrete in tension is studied in a combined experimental and computational research program. The aim is to develop a physically realistic material model describing the response and failure mechanisms at meso-level. This paper presents the applied experimental techniques and obtained results for three loading rates at three moisture levels for one type of concrete. New and unique data is obtained for (i) the dynamic fracture energy at high loading rates, (ii) the moisture distribution in the gel- and micro pores and its effect on rate dependency and (iii) data on crack distribution and width of the fracture zone which is obtained by microscopic research.
